Artist of the Month February 2015
Our Artist of the Month for February is Una Carter, who is a member of Art Angel in Dundee; an arts advocacy project run for and by people with experience of mental health difficulties, and offering a wide spectrum of arts based activities as a means of positive self-expression, creative exploration, self-development through creativity, developing communication, and peer support. We've asked Una a few questions about her work.
When and how did your interest in art develop?
My art is something that has always been inside my head. When I paint, I paint through the spirit of Monet. His hand guides mine as I paint or draw. I have been painting this way since I was a child. As I answer these questions Monet is coming out through me. He is with me here right now.
What influences your art?
Birds; the sea; animals; characters in films; characters from history – I have been working on sculptures of King Arthur and the knights of the roundtable for a number of years now.
What process do you go through when you are creating a piece (starting with the initial idea)?
When I have a blank canvas or piece of paper in front of me I allow myself to also become blank; then Monet comes through me.
Which artists, if any, have you drawn inspiration from?
Monet, Van Gogh.
Do you have a favourite piece? If so, which one and why?
Poppy Fields, Water Lilies
What do you hope the viewer gets from your work?
I would like viewers to experience the same joy as I do when I make my work.
What has been the highlight of your artistic career?
I just love making art. It has all been a highlight.
Has being a part of Outside In been beneficial for you? If so, how?
It has been great. Having people speak to me about my work has made me feel great inside. Seeing people look at my work; seeing them smile has been the greatest thing for me. Hearing people say that they love my work makes me feel good inside.
What is next for you as an artist?
I think I’d love to get five big pieces of paper, put them up on a wall and then just paint and paint and paint. I want to be like Monet and all the other artists from long ago. I know I have it inside of me.
