statement

My current art practise involves producing paintings and drawings that are influenced and similar in appearance to paintings produced in Europe between the 16th – 19th centuries including the Baroque period, Dutch Golden Age, Romanticism and Neo- Classicism. Some of the processes I undertake whilst creating my paintings and drawings involves selecting various elements such as figures or landscapes from historical artworks chosen at random which are then re-worked, added to or have elements omitted to produce one final artwork. The aim of this process is to produce a painting that has gone through its own transformation to produce an artwork that has a different or even a false sense of narrative from that of the original. The narrative within a painting is what interests me and I am attempting to gain a greater understanding of how artworks are produced and to question how this issue has been addressed historically by artists. In addition to this I am attempting to question how its possible to produce an artwork that can mislead or enlighten the viewer into a different sense of understanding of a painting. During this process of painting I am forced to question and experiment with principles that are continuously tackled by artists of issues such as composition, perspective, colour, and tone.

This is a very challenging task that you have given your artistic ability. The three pieces in your show have a polished quality that contemporary art can sometimes lack. This style of 'restoration type 'art can be appreciated by all art historians and its value recognised by collectors of fine art.
